TESSERA Project

Unlocking the first half of the TESSERA project!
Progress and next steps

Over the past months, TESSERA has achieved important milestones, moving steadily towards delivering the project’s core objectives. To begin with, TESSERA has consolidated an initial set of representative operational scenarios in the security field that can substantially benefit from data-driven innovation, highlighting the associated AI based technologies, and conducted a mapping of the corresponding security-oriented families of datasets and an analysis of methods and tools appropriate for their annotation. This has been complemented by an analysis of standards appropriate for the harmonisation of security datasets, as well as methods and techniques for privacy preservation and protection of personal data. In this context, TESSERA has adopted the Data Catalog Vocabulary (DCAT) to describe the properties and metadata of the security-oriented datasets that will be hosted in EU SDSI.

TESSERA has also undertaken a comprehensive review to assess existing data quality frameworks applicable to the security domain, alongside an analysis of the regulatory landscape to identify essential safety checks that ensure compliance to existing and emerging regulations. In parallel, the project analysed the key characteristics of datasets appropriate for testing and evaluating AI solutions for the security domain and carried out a thorough literature review to identify relevant evaluation metrics for assessing the performance of the corresponding AI models.

With these insights in place, the project moved forward to define the conceptual and functional framework of the EU SDSI. This framework is envisioned as a transnational federated system, featuring a multi-layered architecture that encompasses data management, interoperability, and governance. In addition, TESSERA has outlined a set of high-level requirements for software and hardware technologies, interconnectivity, and user management to guide the future development of the Data Space.

To ensure that the project outcomes effectively address the needs of stakeholders in the security domain, TESSERA has made stakeholder engagement a key priority. As part of its continuous dissemination efforts, the project organised its first online technical workshop targeting security practitioners from law enforcement and EU agencies. Their active involvement plays a crucial role in shaping the direction and development of the project.
